What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the muscles in the throat relax so much that the airway becomes narrowed or blocked. This reduction in air flow causes breathing to become shallow and even stop for seconds or minutes at a time, depriving the body and brain of the oxygen it needs to function.

Sleep apnea impacts nearly 1 billion people worldwide, but most people are unaware they have it.

The lack of deep sleep can cause significant fatigue and elevate the risk for serious health problems. There are three main types of sleep apnea, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Sleep apnea symptoms

The real impact of sleep apnea goes beyond just the physical. It can also affect us mentally and emotionally, leaving you constantly feeling like you’re running on a half-empty tank.

While some signs, like age and gender, are more well-known, sleep apnea symptoms will vary from person-to-person.

Snoring, mood swings, headaches, consistent daytime tiredness and exhaustion are common symptoms of sleep apnea.

Unfortunately, poor sleep quality frequently gets overlooked and is often blamed on life activities or as a normal part of aging. Recognizing sleep apnea symptoms is an important step on your journey to better sleep.

Why get tested?

Sleep is essential to our overall well-being, so disruptive sleep can affect personal health, family life and work. When you don’t get optimal sleep, it can hold you back from feeling energized, productive and healthy.

Untreated sleep apnea can increase your risk for developing other chronic and life-threatening conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Diagnosis leads to treatment, and treatment changes lives. A sleep study is often a crucial step in diagnosis, so let’s take the first step to better sleep!
